Our acclaimed directors have worked on some of the most awarded films, documentaries, and TV series. They reveal what’s at stake for our democracy, and the lives of everyday, real Americans.

Jessica Yu

Jessica is an Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and writer. Her feature “Quiz Lady” won the 2024 Emmy for Best TV Movie. The first Asian-American woman to direct a network pilot, her credits include “The West Wing,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Morning Show,” and “Fosse/Verdon,” which earned Emmy and DGA directing nominations. Her documentaries include the water crisis film “Last Call at the Oasis” and the Oscar-winning “Breathing Lessons.” Her award-winning book, “The Garden of the Lost and Abandoned,” chronicles a Ugandan journalist’s quest to reconnect children with their families.

Marshall Curry

Marshall won an Academy Award for "The Neighbor's Window," a short narrative film that he wrote and directed. He was previously nominated three times for Academy Awards for his documentary films, "Street Fight," "If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front," and "A Night At The Garden." His work has won top awards at Sundance, Tribeca, and played on television around the world. His writing has twice been nominated for Writers Guild of America awards.

The Act of Caring

Lucian Read

Lucian Read is a multi-Emmy winning director and cinematographer. In 2024, he directed the feature documentaries, “Lions of Mesopotamia” ( SXSW 2024) and “Personal Courage.” He created the Norman Lear executive-produced docu-series “America Divided.” He was principal cinematographer for the Primetime Emmy-winning “Years of Living Dangerously.” His film "99%" was an official 2013 Sundance selection. As a photojournalist and news producer, he spent nearly three years embedded with US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
